I am SO excited to introduce you to Megan Kerns (who is now officially Megan Foote-Hudson!), today’s bride spotlight!! Megan and Evan were actually married a month ago, and we simply cannot wait to share more from their stunning, special, joyous day soon! Megan is a local wedding photographer whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with in the past, and she’s become such a treasured friend, too. When she and Evan reached out to me right after the got engaged last year, I was so, so honored and ecstatic that they wanted me to be their wedding planner. What an incredible privilege and honor! Over the past year, I’ve gotten to know these two even better, and they are such dear friends with hearts of gold. Truly, both Megan and Evan are kind, warm, hilarious, passionate, inspiring, loving, generous, and so intentional and thoughtful. Their love is inspiring, and they are so madly in love! All that to say… I adore these two so very much, and their wedding day was perfection from start to finish. It was so beautiful and fun, yes, but it was so much more than that. They were celebrated so well by their amazing family and friends, and Megan and Evan planned a wedding that reflected their love story so intentionally, they kept their marriage as the focus, they selected meaningful and intentional details and designs, and they celebrated their family, friends, and community with so much genuine love, generosity, and excitement! I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that Megan and Evan are one of those couples that you can’t help but adore – as a wedding planner and more importantly, as friends.
Without further ado, here’s a bridal spotlight on sweet Megan!
1. Tell us a little bit about you and your fiance, Evan!
Evan and I are both from Durham, in fact our childhood homes were actually 1.5 miles apart! We met and started dating in high school at Durham School of the Arts (yay, high school sweethearts) . In 2005, we were both selected to attend a high school leadership camp for student athletes at Elon University. At the conclusion of camp, Evan made it a point to get my AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) screen name, so naturally we started chatting online and soon found ourselves on our first date, a romantic trip to Southpoint Mall to see Disney’s newly released, Glory Road. We ended up going to prom twice, and as they say the rest is history!
After highschool, Evan attended UNC Asheville and I went to NC State. When Evan moved back to Durham after college he landed a job at the Durham Visitors Convention Bureau, theofficial marketing agency for Durham. His role is to manage all the touch-points in town that a visitor may encounter. When I graduated, I started teaching 8th grade Social Studies in Wake County at West Millbrook Middle School and later founded my own wedding photography business, Megan Kerns Photography.
We both love hanging out with each other- spending quality time together is one of the most important aspects of our relationship. Evan and I love trying new places to eat, drink or shop around the Triangle, we truly enjoy supporting local businesses. We also love sports; one of our favorite things to do in the summer is attend a Durham Bulls baseball game. We love taking trips to the mountains, camping and hanging out with our awesome fur baby, Winston!
2. What are you most excited for about your wedding day?
I think I am most excited about seeing all of our closest family and friends together under the same roof. It’s been an amazing experience to see our family members and friends from all across the United States come together to celebrate our relationship. It’s truly the most humbling feeling.
3. What was your biggest inspiration for your wedding design?
My biggest inspiration for our wedding day design was a styled shoot that I found in the 2017 edition of the Trendy Bride magazine. The colors, tone and mood of the entire styled shoot really spoke to me! I loved how all the bold maroons, greenery and gold accents looked and complimented each other. I knew I wanted to embrace the same style.
4. Are you doing a first look or saving it for walking down the aisle?
5. Describe your style in one word.
6. What’s your favorite way to relax and unwind?
Yoga. In fact we’re planning on engaging in a yoga practice on the morning of our wedding day. I’ve hired a friend to come teach a quick 45 minute class for my bridesmaids and I.
7. What is something you’re passionate about?
I’m passionate about my family, my friends and spending quality time with the ones I love.
8. What has been the biggest surprise in the wedding planning process?
We had a lot of surprises and realizations throughout our wedding planning process. Out of everything we have learned over the past year, I think learning wedding day logistics surprised me the most. For example, invitations, seating charts, guest counts, decor, scheduling. Learning how all the vendors work together to create a smooth wedding day is absolutely incredible.
9. What is your favorite part of your wedding design?
The colors! I am so excited to see all the colors we’ve included come to life. We choose to include lots of maroons, purples, reds and navy in our design. We’ve referred to them as “Berry Tones” through out the year. The various colors mixed in with greenery and soft grey tones is my favorite part of our wedding day design.
10. What is your favorite thing about Evan?
Evan has one of the kindest hearts. He is a man who wants to use his own strengths to serve others. He is passionate about making the world a better place for everyone. His big heart and his ambition to change the world is truly inspiring to me. He is a great listener, a loyal friend and constantly puts others before himself.
11. How has being a photographer affected your wedding design and your expectations?
As a wedding photographer, I had a very different perspective on the wedding planning process. Walking into this experience, I already knew a lot about the ins and outs of a wedding day (not all of it, but a decent amount). I also had a good idea of the vendors that I wanted to work with because I had worked with them on various occasions before. I am a firm believer that brides need to hire vendors that they trust, enjoy being around and admire. Putting your full trust into your vendor team is SO IMPORTANT, because at the end of the day they are the ones who execute your goals, dream and vision. We were so lucky to hire such an amazing vendor team for our day. Our vendors knocked our socks off! They exceeded all our expectations, time and time again. I believed in this before, but I am living proof that this is a crucial decision in your wedding planning process.
Thank you so much for sharing, Megan!! And endless congrats on being a married lady now – love you guys!
